Once again we have a very enjoyable and successful chapter meeting yesterday (3 July 2010) on a pleasant Saturday morning. This would not be possible without the presence of members and our visiting toastmasters. The Exco and members of Toastmasters @Hope appreciate the presence of our visiting toastmasters very much and thank Division A Governor, Albert Lim, Area A5 Governor, Brendan Goh, Chin Mei Har, Anthony Leong, Ng Cher Khim, and Billy Pham for gracing our 3rd chapter meeting cum Charter Exco Installation ceremony.
A total of 25 people were present at this meeting, and in our midst were two non-toastmasters visitors, Ravichanthiran and Tan Kok Khiang, who promptly signed up as members at the end of our meeting. We warmly welcome them into our fold. Helen and Susan came early to cheerfully welcome all members, guests, and visitors at the Welcome and Registration table. It is also heartening to see so many chirpy 'early birds' at the chapter meeting, not to mention the sight of our diligent Sergeant-at-Arms, Philip Quek, preparing a sumptuous spread for us all. Thank you, Philip.
Our effable Mentor, Mike Woon, set the mood for the meeting in his usual energetic style by welcoming all and one. All visitors and appointment holders got a special mention from him.
Albert Lim as our Division Governor gave the opening address where he, with great emotion, expressed his hope for the future for his 'baby', Toastmasters@Hope. He reminisced the 'birth pangs' in chartering the club as well as his recognition of the hidden gifts buried in each of our members. His message to us is that as we journey together to achieve the club's and personal goals, love is what cements our gifts and aspirations together - I Cor 13. Albert exhorted us with his closing words - "love cancels all evils, love salves all pain, love binds all members and church together".
Brendan Goh, our young Area Governor, installed the Exco flawlessly in a simple but smart ceremony.
This is followed by the newly installed Charter President's (Luke Thurai) inauguration speech. Luke expressed his heartfelt thanks to all who have helped in the process of chartering the club and the support given to him, especially from his good friend, MichaEl. He also spoke about how Toastmasters@Hope can provide the environment to members (both from the church and the community at large) to become better communicators. At our chapter meetings, there is a spirit of encouragement where everyone wants speakers to do well, and Luke encouraged us to support each other as we strive to be better speakers and leaders.
Merine and Senthill gamely agreed to take up the role of Timer and Ah Counter, respectively, for the first time. Merine found it a learning challenging experience and enjoyed it so much that she volunteered (- I like this) to be the Timer again for our next chapter meeting with the aim to improve and perfect her role.
Instead of the usual 'Word of The Day' given by all Language Evaluators, Ng Cher Khim, creatively came out with the 'Rhetorical Device of the Day', which for this meeting is the "pun". Being a humourous speech champion, he could not help but to introduce humour by giving us an example of how the words "stock option" and 'hearing" can both be used as a pun, which caused us to burst into laughter. In his language evaluation, Cher Khim highlighted the rhetorical devices used and pointed out the difference between expressing a desire to thank someone and actually thanking the person.
Our Joke Master for the day, Sharon Siow shared with us a number of jokes and was the only one who used the 'Rhetorical Device of The Day' - 'shellfish' and 'selfish'. Kudos to her! Members from the floor - Catherine and Mike Woon also contributed 4 jokes between them.
Hong Le Diem Pham, who hails from Vietnam but who is now a Singapore PR, surprised us with her 'Ice Breaker' speech titled "HONG". It is unusual to see a speaker giving her maiden speech by making use of visual aid (whyte board), using acronym (HONG), and inspiring us to be better people without even trying. We learnt that Hong's hometown is Hanoi, she's been Overseas for 7 years, she loves New challenges, and she shows Gratitude to friends and family, and is grateful to be able to talk and to speak at our chapter meeting. "Life is just great!"- according to her. What struck me was that without putting in any effort, she has reminded us to be grateful for all things, big and small, in our life. Thank you, Hong.
May Tham shared with us her memorable "Trip to Huang Shan" in such a captivating way that it brought back wonderful memories to those who have been there and brought those who have not been there to 'experience' the physically challenging trip and the majestic beauty of Huang Shan with her. Her use of vivid imagery caused her story to come alive as we joined her on this daunting trip up the mountain. From her speech, we also discovered that May has a sense of humour.
Not to be outdone by his beloved wife (May), Richard delivered his speech "Lost in Whys" with vitality. As usual, he displayed a natural flow of the English language. Richard skillfully adapted the "Parable of The Lost Son" by giving it a modern twist with a contemporary setting. His story was that of the love of a father for his wayward son, and some of us were reminded of the Love of God and One Who is "slow to anger, gracious, and keen to draw near to us".
We also had a very challenging Table Topics session with Table-Topics Master, Billy Pham, giving us the theme "Celebrities". Speakers were given a chance to be a celebrity. Peter became Christina Ronaldo, the footballer, MichaEl became the President of America, Brendan became Osama bin Laden, Murni became the Best Player in World Cup 2010, and our visitor, Kok Khiang, (- kudos to him) bravely became Steve Jobs.
The Best Project Speaker ribbon went to Richard Wong, the Best Table Topics Speaker ribbon went to MichaEl Lau, and the Best Evaluator ribbon went to Chin Mei Har.
With this reflection of our third chapter meeting, I will say Goodnight and Sweet Dreams.
Peace Be With You All
