Combined Meeting with PL Link Toastmasters Club on 4 Sep 2010
What an interesting and fulfilling combined meeting we had on saturday morning!
Thanks to all present for making it a success. We are especially honored to have our Immediate Past District 80 Governor Edward Ma DTM, Area A5 Governor Brendan Goh ACG CL, Club President of PL Link Sally Tan and her fellow members and our Club Sponsor Mike Woon CTM CL with us.
A total of 22 attendees with two children in our midst (kudos to their parent who brought them along. I am sure they will have a headstart in public speaking!) As usual, many came early to fellowship. We would like to show our appreciation to members from PL Link who not only came at the same time but about 30 minutes before the start of the meeting.
Since we have many unfamiliar faces amongst all, SAA Sharon Siow started the meeting by giving each individual 20 seconds to introduce themselves. The TMD was a young lady; Yolanda Zhang Xiao from PL Link who did a good job in controlling the flow of the whole meeting.
Club President of PL Link; Sally Tan gave an inspiring opening speech by encouraging us not to stop in improving ourselves but to leave a Legacy. She even brought it one step further by getting all to do a ‘toast’ to one another, to which our MichaEL Lau literally shouted ‘Cheers!’ which brought a high to today’s meeting. She also used the phrase ‘practise makes perfect’ which mean to ‘master.’ She had cleverly broke down and made good use of the word ‘toastmaster’ in her speech which left a deep impression on us.
Before giving out the Charter Certificate to all Charter Members of Toastmasters@Hope, our Immediate Past District 80 Governor Edward Ma DTM shared with us the similarity between the two clubs (PL Link and Toastmasters@Hope). Both were charter in the month of June amid four years apart. He also encouraged us to have Faith in being a toastmaster. That it can really help us to improve and excel in our communication skill. ‘Don’t give up on improving your listening, speaking and leadership skill’ said Edward Ma.
Since we have 3 newer members who are not charter members, VP Membership Sharon Siow did an Induction. It was a good practice as all members were requested to say a Pledge to reaffirm their commitment in being a toastmasters.
Our Language Evaluator, Area A5 Governor Brendan Goh ACG CL gave the word of the day ‘Immaculate’ which means ‘perfectly clean or tidy’ or ‘perfect and without any mistake’. In his evaluation, he encouraged the use of Rhetorical Devices to enhance our speeches and equal it to adding pepper and salt to our food. Improving on our vocabulary was another area which he shared. Examples are : instead of ‘clearly’, we can use ‘with great clarity’, ‘a life full of problems’ can become ‘a problematic life’ and ‘transfer place’ becomes ‘relocate’.
Our latest addition to Toastmasters@Hope; Kok Khiang did his ‘Ice Breaker’ with ease and all of us got to know him better. We got to know that he was a Graduate from Mechanical Engineering but chose to go into teaching so as to value-add to other people’s lives. He also use the metaphor of life being a candle which we can use to light up other’s life. What a noble attitude!
Our ever lively Hong did her Project 2 ‘Organise Your Speech’ by telling us that there is no ‘problem-free life’but its our attitude toward it that makes the difference. Positive attitude give positive results!
Paul Amazona, a rocker from PL Link shared with us his growing up years with three different families. His positive mind had him learnt the good values from all three families with the last one influenced him to love rock music. He reinterate that everyone needs to have a sense of belonging, especially towards the family!
All these interesting prepared speeches were followed by another entertaining session of table topics when our first time Table Topics Master Senthil Ananth came up with topics relating to ‘stuck in situation in Singapore’. May Tham shared her ironical mindset where she was actually happy to be ‘stuck in a traffic jam’ when she first got her driving licence because that gave her a break from driving due to her fear when being a new driver. Richard Wong took his opportunity on his topic of ‘Singapore being an immaculate country’ to share about his home situation instead. Sally Tan, Club President from PL Link let out her weakness to all on her fear of height in her topic ‘stuck in the Singapore Flyer’. Susan Yee told us she will stay cool and pray for devine help if she is ‘stuck in an elevator with nothing working, not even her handphone’. Our sponsor Mike Woon said he would make full use of the peace and freedom to read his book if he is ‘stuck in a mrt not meant for passenger’. Our last table topics speaker Ravichanthiran shared on his positive attitude towards all the feedback on his Project 1 when he was given the topic ‘I did it with scream and joy’.
We had three Project Evaluators in Freddie Lee and Lili Chung from PL Link and Richard Wong from TM@Hope. All three gave very encouraging and constructive ideas to our Prepared Speech Speakers.
Julia Lim from PL Link became one of our very first General Evaluator in TM@Hope. She did well by commending and giving some recommendation to some appointment holders for the day.
As two out of three Prepared Speech Speakers spoke out of time, there was no voting. The best Table Topics Speaker went to Mike Woon and Best Project Evaluator went to Lili Chung.
Thanks to all appointment holders; Merine and Helen at the reception plus helping out in collecting the voting slips, Karen Koh at the Ah counter, Susan Yee as Timer and all the other audience.
We look forward to seeing you on our next chapter meeting on 18th September which is our 3rd Speechcraft meeting.
Cheers,
Sharon SiowVP- Membership 2010/11
